It is here around the engine shop that the majority of the work is left to be done. Then the wiring must be all connected up and a few figures added to the outside. Finally ,I think that we are slowly getting there!
I was worried that the engine shop walls looked too high especially with all those vertical battens emphasizing the height. After leaning up those crates to the wall it seems to bring it all together.
This corner is very important to the success of the overall piece as it gives the viewer some nice sight lines into the workshop and hangar.

I am thinking about having these two guys sitting on boxes taking a break near the loading area. One guy is actually sitting on an old aircraft seat that I have often seen hanging around out old airports.I think that they kind of fit in with the general relaxed mood of the whole scene.(probably tea time)
The last two figures will be standing out near the back door sneaking a cigarette.

Posing figures.
Although on occasion I will do a major modification on a figure (such as from a standing to a seated position ) mostly l try to work with what I got out of the box.The challenge is to come up with a good idea of how to use them.To create a little scenario that helps to tell the story of the diorama.I seldom use action poses .My purpose is to hold the viewers eye just long enough so that he really doesn't expect any movement from the figures.Long enough for him to suspend his disbelief at what he is looking at and let his imagination get to work.
My goal someday is to have complete control over the process from start to finish .Creating a figure to scale, painting it and have it look like a particular person.

I think that I will stop here for now as too much handling is causing the figures to become too shiny.I will glue this all together as one assembly and then hold on to the wooden boxes to complete the painting.Anyway this gives you an idea of how it will look when finished.

Upon completion of this "Keepers of the Flame" project I plan to organize this thread into a more comprehensive book -like form ,concentrating upon the order of build ,using both text and pictures in their proper sequence.I will permanently post an album of pics of this diorama under construction.
Because I am limited to a 1,000 pics on my photobucket album, I have had to on occasion delete some of the older pics. Some of you have expressed to me that you find it frustrating searching for something only to find it has been deleted.
I agree!
The new more book-like thread will concentrate more on the build itself rather than the JohnReid philosophy of art and other ramblings.Tips and techniques will be put in its proper section for easier reference.
When I started this thread I had no idea that it would grow to the size that it has ,so for those interested please be patient with the present format for awhile.Cheers! John.

Photobucket albums
I am organizing all my pictures into different albums.
Hangar dio1-the Albatros
Hangar dio2-the Nieuport
Hangar dio3-the Jenny Canuck

The Jenny will be organized into the proper sequence of the build.

In addition I am creating sub albums for other mayor components such as airplanes, cars, cars, trucks, engines etc.....
Cheers! John.

Over the course of this build I have enjoyed taking pictures of some of the figures and using them to tell little stories that will eventually exist in these pictures only. This figure is destined to go outside with the pilot group.
It is also a lot of fun coming up with your own titles for these pictures such as
"Threshold of a New World" or "Dawn of a New Era" etc......
It looks to me that he is looking out the door trying to imagine what may be over the horizon.

Pictures like these will be found in my new sub-album called "Figures" in my photobucket .

Hi guys! lost this bookmark somehow. This is where I am on my new diorama. :)

The windows on the first panel are finished with only the door left to do .
The second panel windows are now underway and should be finished soon. With a little nice lighting and window decorations it should add a lot of depth to the diorama. The doors are next and then probably the porches.
