Illinois Town May Outlaw Distracted Driving
Updated 4:58 PM ET March 18, 2006
Drinking a latte, talking on the phone or even turning around to discipline the kids while driving could soon be a crime in Winnetka, Ill.
Violators would pay up to $750 in fines.
$750 for "coffee and looking back at your children?" said Alberto Paracchini, a Winnetka resident. "That sounds a bit extreme to me."
Jenny Cleary, a mother of three, including 2-year-old twins, said avoiding distraction with a car full of kids seems impossible.
"I'm drinking a cup of coffee, yelling to sit down get in your car seat, stop fighting ... all those different things at one time," she said. "But I don't really think it distracts from my driving."
The police chief who drew up the proposal would argue otherwise.
"What I'm advocating," Police Chief Joseph De Lopez said, "is making the public more aware of their responsibility to be attentive drivers -- to minimize the danger they pose to themselves and others when they're driving."
Distracted drivers cause an estimated 1.2 million accidents a year. In fact, 46 percent of drivers surveyed by the American Automobile Association admitted to putting on make up, shaving or doing some sort of personal grooming behind the wheel. Seventy-one percent said they eat or drink and 92 percent said they fiddle with the radio. Yet the cell phone is the main culprit.
Laws Across the Country At least 17 states have laws that restrict the use of handheld cell phones behind the wheel, but studies show that has done little to reduce the accidents.
"We try to advocate that motorists use common sense," said Kris Lathan of AAA. "Necessarily having two hands on the wheel doesn't matter if your mind's not on the road."
That is why Connecticut, the District of Columbia and New Hampshire fine drivers for other distractions that lead to a crash.
Town leaders in Winnetka are still talking about whether they could enforce such a law. If nothing else, this proposal gives drivers cause to think about what they're not thinking about when they're on the road.
Atleast somebody's trying here!

Dual stupidity! I don't know whats stupider, talking on the cell phone while behind the wheel, or trying to make laws against it! With up to a $750.00 fine!!

I wonder how many crashes have been caused by cops talking on their hand-held mikes or accessing their in-car computer systems.

Well I'm not driving to Winnetka anymore. I am a self-distractable guy. Besides, the whole North Shore is distracted by something it seems.

Man NY could use a law like that, just the other day I got rear ended by some schmuck who was looking in his vanity mirror.... The guy ahead of me stopped abruptly, but the guy behind me hit me, funny thing is, I watched him in my mirror while he was looking at himself, and not paying attention. I hate people who drive!!!

Ha ha ha...cops in our area don't get speeding tickets...but they don't give them either. Driving around the area I live is like driving bumper cars at the fair, but they go a lot faster. I was driving behind a guy in a SUV yesterday who was all over the road and I noticed that he was talking on a cell phone and had a drink in his other hand.

weeg...perhaps we could do some kind of "cop-exchange" program so they can learn a little from each other...yours a little more leniency and ours a little more police work.

George Orwell here we come...........big brother is now in the cockpit with you..........if they can't tax us anymore, why not drum up 'distraction' charges and laugh all the way to the bank.

You are right about that crockett...many times around here they seem to be more apt to pick somebody out who is breaking a "minor law" than the people who are dealing drugs or other "major crimes". Not to say that somebody being distracted by talking on the telephone while driving can't be a major problem.

Wow...that is pretty rough stuff. I didn't have a clue it still got that way around there. You don't hear much about it in the news anymore. I try to keep up by reading the Times and checking out the BBC site...but I haven't been hitting them near enough evidentally. Might I inquire what the riot was about? What is the Snatch Squad? Sorry for the dumb sounding questions...I only just found out recently what The Disappeared were. I have to say, that is not one of my strongpoints with history...and I have only just started reading more about it. If you don't want to reply in this post...so as we don't hijack it from the original content, you can email me...my address is visible when you click on my profile.

Oh, okay...I re-read what you posted before and read it wrong the first time. Sorry about that. Ha ha ha...never thought about the hijack phrase. I meant so we don't just take it over from others and make it a completely off-topic post from the subject title. I have seen the term used on other forums and thought it was an appropriate term for what happens sometimes. There is a good possibility I will take you up on the history questions. I am reading about WWI right now...very interesting stuff. I was almost entirely a WWII and up history person but I have been trying to expand my horizons a bit.
