Can anybody explain what the heck is going on at FSM. I re-registered, but since I am not a magazine subscriber, I apparently can't post on the forums, just view them? ?? What the? ? Steve

no you can post on them, you can retrieve your old nickname.. but Steve, it is ridiculous. I first read about the change in Dec. issue of FSM, says that if you have a subscription you get full benefits of the site, and if you are a month to month buyer, there is a code in the magazine that you enter every month! you just gotta re open the old account and go from there, I don't remember how I did it, said something about the free forums or something. No one seems to like the changes, myself included, the site is just too messy now!

I was managing the 60th Aniversary of the Pacific GB on FSM as well as membership on other GB's but due to changes I won't be visiting FSM as freaquently as I did in the past.
Changes or no changes, I agree with Dave in saying it's about money and I will add this small bit by saying, Junior was bourght out by FSM with his 'Flight 19' site. As Scale Magic was instrumental in getting Accurate Minatures detailed info to correct their AM decal sheet for their Avenger aircraft kits.
I'm not one to blow my own trumpet, but I worked in the retail side of the hobby for 10 years apart from my teaching duties, I had customers contact me from around the world asking for help on model subjects, or make resin bits for their model projects, people sourght after my services by word of mouth, even with Scale Magic's resin components, decal production projects, contracted model building. I still get old shop customers, club members, Defence Dept's and forum members ask for help in some way with problems or advice on a daily basis.
Scale Magic does a lot of behind the scenes consultancy work with a lot of different manufacturers and organizations, not just a 3 man establishment of experienced model builders.

Well,
Here is what is happening to me. I can't post or reply in any forum. Finescale customer service says that unless I subscribe, or buy a magazine monthly, I am denied exclusive access to the sight. When I tried to post, my screen went to the Account status window, an prompted me to subscribe.
I don't wish to subscribe to a magazine that doesn't offer me the articles and information that I am interested in. I mean, after 30 plus years of building aircraft, ships, cars and armor, I don't want to purchase a rag that bores me to tears. Coupled with a painfully slow subscription service, (I would receive my mag two weeks after it hit the shelves at the LHS), I just am not interested.
Bottom line, after 2000 posts, I'm done with FSM, and not by choice.
I would like to commend the proprietors of this site, and I hope that it stays as it is, a free and open forum, where a "family atmosphere" is nutured and maintained.
Regards,
Steve

heh, I agree Steve. Since I started comming to this forum, I've stopped going to FSM. The atmosphere here is a little more comfortable to be honest.. a little slower in pace and less ULTRA critical of a build! I mean, there's constructive comments, and there's destructive. We all know who the destructive "Pros" were but I'm glad I'm at this forum... nice a calm! Huzzah

I've managed to getb onto FSM without any problems, however my subscrition is soon to run out and I will not re-new it. If we are to pay to be there, then I simply won't be there. To be honest, I don't like the new look and the new rules are going to put a lot of people off returning to the site. Shame, I liked it as it was. I've heard of some trouble over there concerning folks being less than polite about other poeples builds, I have'nt seen it myself, has that really happened?

Sorry to jump in here, but I just wanted to clear up one of the major misconceptions about the relaunched FSM.com. While there is content (the online Workbench Reviews and New Product Databases) available only to those who subscribe or buy issues on the newsstand, the Forum remains free to everyone and we continue to have many other features such as the Reader and Show Galleries on the site that remain available to all.
As for the technical issues, we've certainly had our share since the relaunch, but we've been working tirelessly to get them corrected as quickly as possible. Of course the goal is to anticipate every possible scenario, but it seems there are always issues that pop up once things go 'live.'
Changes like this are always a bit bumpy at first but we're confident that once everyone gets settled in, FSM.com will continue to be viewed as an excellent online resources.

Scale Magic does a lot of behind the scenes consultancy work with a lot of different manufacturers and organizations, not just a 3 man establishment of experienced model builders. And, may I ask, what has any of this to do with the new FSM site? Just curious. I had no problem getting onto the new site. I go to the forums 2 or 3 times a day and have never had a screen come up asking me to subscribe. (No. I am not a current subscriber.) As far as growing pains? Yea, they got 'em. But, guess what? Every time I have tried to go to the chat on this site, it freezes my computer up. I have to alt+control+delete to get it back working. But, I didn't go to another site and bad mouth this site. I figured it's a glitch in the program and it will be worked out. FSM is still, pretty much, a free site with some of the finest modelers I have had the opportunity to know. I'll probably not be a very popular person around here after this but, I, for one, happen to like FSM's site and will continue to peruse it's forums. And one last thing. CDNTanker? I don't know what particular forum you received the "ULTRA critical" critique in but, it sure hasn't been in any of the ones that I frequent. All I have seen is honest and supportive responses to all builds that have been posted.
