Only officially street raced once about 1980... cousins were in town of Payette for uncles funeral... My cousins wanted to fo to Ontario about 6 miles up the road to check out the cruise a
69 notch back Bright Lime Green Pastel pulled along side at a red light and bliped the throttle...
I hadn't decided to take the challenge so when light turned on take off I let the My 69 Roadrunner (Orange with black stripes and top) lumber and lurch forward from not giving enough gas on take off didn't kill it just didn't leave light smooth...
Cousins started ribbing me thought you said this car would run and move etc...
I told them to shut up I just hadn't decided I wanted to race the Stang... on next round the same light same stang same lanes, 4 kids laughing in Stang pissed me off...
Cousin Contrearas asked can you get a good launch...
Yeah I have to set my mind to decide I wanted to race rather than blow off the challenge ahead of time...
I revved the motor 3 times to Mustangs challengin revs as soon as I caught green I dumped the clutch at 2800 rpms and my rear tires left their normal 8" dual rubber patches and My roadrunner leaped forward taking an immediate lead of about 18"
(reason for this exact rpm was with 3.23 gears and the tires I was runningG70-14's they spinned only slightly and car put all efforts into moving forward not a smoke show)
at second gear Bold Bird leaped ahead by another 1/2 a car length and was pulling away hard now...
the Mustang turned off on nearest street and disappeared...
Later we saw the stang in a parking lot with several other cars and spectators watching the cruise...The Stang remained parked rest of the evening..
I wasn't challenged again the whole evening to race we guessed that the Bright Green Stang and its driver must have been the local supposed race king and the thought of him getting spanked that hard by a car from another County...
had his jets cooled...
there is a figurine which resembles how I was dress in 70's clothes found in the New Bettle with motorized option by Tamiya ...
I have naturally curly hair so at the time I sported a all natural (not a permanent, not salon artificial) platinum blonde afro...
LOL

Wow thats awesome, what engine? the 383? Roadrunners are my favorite cars, quarter miles of over 100 mph with the standard engine right out of the factory, now thats what I like to hear!

This message brings back a lot of memories. In the mid-50s I built a street racer from a 1951 Chevrolet I bought. It had a blown engine so I got it from the dealer real cheap. I installed a new engine, changed the transmission from an automatic to standard and reversed the shifting linkage to left hand on the column as I am left handed, I changed the rear end ratio, lowered the car by four inches and had it custom painted. There wasn't a Ford which could beat it. It was a hot car. My"hot car" today is a 1973 Triumph TR-6 with triple Weber carbs. I'm in the process of having the engine rebuilt.

i am sure being spanked by a triumph ticked off some ford owners, just as getting beat by my SRT-4 (i miss that car!) ticked off some camero owners. You just got taken... BY A NEON!!!

I have two of the cars that my father ran in 62 and 63 Drag racing.. they where also every day drivers. both of them have cut rear springs to drop the tail down for weight. The cars that where jacked up where called rake cars and they where just no go. The one i had in school was a 76 Camaro with a 427ci two 4s. Also i did the same a lot of kids ragged on me for having the front end up in the air but when i gassed them at the line they where the ones with there mouth hanging open. she ran 12.3s not leaving 3 gear.

He He He, memories being brought back here. i used to be involved in street racing, of the semi organised variety, , similar sort of thing to the cannon ball run. everyone gathered in a car park, having already paid the entry fee. we were given envelopes with the destination in, (could be anything from a couple of dozen miles to 100 or more). when the starter shouted "NOW" envelopes get torn open then rubber got burnt as everyone shot off to try get to the finish point, you could be on your own or carry a navigator. i ran alone. to be honest i only ever got first once, and the prize money was 75% of the takings of the entry fee. rounded up to th nearest £10, made my winnings £80, £5 each entry fee) not much but it was the fun of taking part that was the best bit. i ran a MK2 ford Escort, full group N spec rally car, lowered suspension uprated 30%, twin 45dcoe side draught carbs. full janspeed exhaust, fast road cam. roller tappets, lightened and ballenced flywheel and cam. lightened pistons, and engine taken out from 1600 to 1750 cc (fairly small but could almost rev like a motorcycle) had a L.S.Diff, quickshift tranny, comp clutch. interior stripped out, bucket seats and 5 point harnesses. aluminium racing tank in the trunk. wish i still had that car. it was fun to drive, (it was also my daily driver too) all the best, and thanks for the trip down memory lane.
