Ok guys, I realize this is a matter of personal choice but...I need some real help here, a few days ago the first thing I did was dip the canopy in Future like I have heard to do, that went great ;D! Ok, I let it cure 4 24 hours, I then applied Bare metal foil and burnished it down, that turned out great also! Today I proceeded to carefully cut the framework out so it can be painted, [glow=red,2,300]the BMF left sticky residue all over[/glow]! What do I do Is the BMF bad? Is it not really the thing to use? Is parafilm M any good to use? And....how does one paint the framework on the "inside" of the canopy? Besides, "very carefully" Sry 4 all the newb questions but...i'm a newb
Thankyou very much 4 any informative answers!!! Bill

Bill,
Personaly I use Tamiya masking tape for my canopy's and in some cases the Eduard canopy masks, I've never used future either, but everyone has a different favorite style for doing canopy's. I've never painted the inside of a canopy all ways everything is external on my maskings.

Ahhh, ok. Ummm, how did u cover the canopy Rob? did u cut tiny little pieces and fill in the panels? or cover it all then cut out the panels? I just used used Future cuz "most" of what I have read says it makes the canopy look better, and, I have to admit it did! Till I ruined it.So, there is nothing I can do to get that sticky residue off?? Thx 4 the help Rob, Bill

Bill, I use Tamiya tape, and some times I use scotch tape you just have to make sure it is pressed down. I use future also and let it set for atleast 24hrs before I do anything to it.

Ok, thx guys ;Dpicking the paint off with a toothpick won't harm (scratch) the coat of Future? And I hate to sound repetitive, but...right now my biggest problem is the sticky residue left by the BMF that I took off! What do you think? should I just go ahead and remove all the BMF, strip the canopy and start over? That is about all I can think of! THx again fellas, Bill

Here's an old "shade-tree" mechanic trick for removing gummy residue: swab the area with WD-40. It will usually deconstruct the adhesive making it easy to wipe it off. If the canopy fogs, smears or gets scratched you can re-dip it in Future. Be sure to wash the canopy with soap and water before trying any additional Futuring or painting. Goo Gone is also a good addition to your modelling bench. Its a bit more agressive than WD-40, and works on a variety of weird smudges and stains. Phil

GooGone will take it right off and shouldn't harm the Future or the paint. You can get it just about anywhere, Walgreens, WalMArt, anything like that.

That’s the most dreaded thing about modeling aircraft is masking those bloody canopies IMHO. Personally I like using the blue painters masking tape. I tried using the bare metal stuff once and had the same problem w/ residue and never went back to it . I’ve never tried the Tamiya masking tape— but I I’m tempted to try it though, if it makes masking canopies a little bit easier .

The best independently run website for canopy masking advice, as well as a myriad of other topics is: www.swannysmodels.comThank you, Swanny, whereever you are... His canopy masking technique (search around, you'll find it!) is excellent, and his other advice is great, too.

Several of you gents had the right answer. GooGone of Goof Off both work great for removing sticky residues, especially after removing pricing labels, bar code stickers and such. I have always used the blue painters masking tape myself and found it works the best, at least for me. Ed

I have found that BMF leaves a residue also especially if it is left on too long. But the googone goofoff works great Scotch foggy tape and blue painters tape are great
