I recently picked up a Tamiya Panther kit at the Hobby Lobby sale--to build once I finish the half dozen or so Tigers I have sitting around the house. Just how inaccurate is this kit, and what can I do to improve it? Thanks!

Hey uproar ;D, I saw that kit during the sales, kept picking it up and looking at it, but held out for a DML Panther. I don't remember what model of the Panther it was anymore, drat . Well, Steve (Crockett) will be here later, He probably will be able to answer your questions. Have Fun, Bill

Well, I don't have access to the kit right now, so I can't say the actual kit number, but it is the 1/35 Ausf A with two crew members, doesn't designate "early" or "late"...does this help? Retail was around $20 or so--relatively cheap.

That's one of Tamiyas motorized kits from the 1970's. The turret shape is off but can be corrected with Tony Greenland's templates (avaliable in an issue of FSM, possiblr on-line somewhere too), it is also missing an entire set of road wheels (it has 24 instead of the reqired 32), the mantlet/gun mount is 6mm to wide and the tracks are hideous.

Geez....hardly worth the effort. No wonder it was on sale!

Well, I could add to the list of "why you don't want this kit" but I think enough has been said. You can find this beauty under construction on this forum as a matter of fact. Pay close attention to the laughably undersized idler wheels, (one of the many goofs on this masterpiece.
If you want a Tamiya Panther that's pretty good, go with the G. They did pretty well on this kit. Best "A" on the market is DML IMHO.

Tamiya's Gs are good but I would go with the Dragon (DML) kits now as they offer more "bang for the buck".

I'm far more familiar with the Tiger I than I am the Panther, and actually I'm too obsessed with accuracy to even want to start a kit that flawed. I plead ignorance--it was on sale, and I "had to buy something", lol. I think I'm going to hold out for the Dragon Panther, once I hack my way through all the other Tiger kits I have. I've got a Tiger Initial, two Earlies, a Midproduction, and a Late sitting on the shelf, as well as the Dragon Tiger (P), a JagdTiger, JagdPanther, and JagdPanzer...I have my hands quite full enough for awhile, thank you.

Well you got the kit so you might as well build it, just slap it together and use it for paint practice.
