Greg, as far as I know,if its not wearing camo- then its silver. here's some more "progress", after a lot of swearing, several cups of coffee and threatening my model with the spares box-the paint scheme finally got finshed! here she is all varnished and waiting for weathering. Also, here's a pic of my "modified" figure of Grp.Capt. Caldwell. My wife says I captured the look of him! See you later, Darren.

Greg,
I have some pix of Isreali Spits, send me an IM and I'll send them back to you, I'm certain they are BMF.
Darren,
Your Oz Mk VIII is looking good, [Oz Dark Earth was more a chocalate colour, but you've replicated a good faded cammo scheme on the subject], I like the figure he looks a lot like Clive.

G'day Rob, thanks for your comments, I was reaching for a faded look, so its nice that it looks that way to you. I've had plenty trouble with this kit so I don't know how much surface detail has been lost through all the sanding etc. I'll soon find out when I detail the panel lines. Anyway enough about my model-look at yours! Both your Spits look fantastic! Your "Grey Nurse" has inspired me to build that version too. I've picked up an old decal sheet on e-bay with those markings, so if this build is still on going after I've done this Mk.VIII-I just might build another. Great to see more of your work,
Regards,
Darren.

Hi Everyone, weathering finished, engine finished, landing gear on-she has just been glossed and tomorrow she will recieve her decals. Unfortunately, the panel lines are not as good as I would like, but I'm not going to start re-scribing now! Anyway, here she is after todays madness in my workshop. See you later, Darren. .

Darren,
That's one excellent build so far, did you fit another gun in the bay besides the 20mm Cannon ? Judging from the cordite stains of the 20mm, is why I asked, as most of our Mk VIII's had the 20mm's mountings rotated from inner too outer and visa versa.

G'day Rob,
I'll have to hold my hands up! I did the cordite stains before I mounted the 20mm barrels-I have'nt fitted another gun bay so there should only be one stain on each wing. It will be easy to fix, I'm glad you noticed! Thanks for your kind words about the build, I'm still not 100% happy with it, but I have enjoyed the challange that this kit gave me. I'm hoping that after the decals and a dull coat finish, the weathering will show through.
My next challange, is those thin black stripes on the nose-I think I might use some spare decal for this job, theres no way I'll be able to mask/paint those!
See you later,
Darren.

Darren,
The black bands would be better as a decal application, there is also a thin black line on the fuselage band that is ofset [forward of the centreline], I have two of these kits [moulded in white and the brownish moulding with the figures]. I'm intending to marry the wing of the ICM kit too the Hasegawa fuselage.

Hi Rob,
I've gone through my decal box and found plenty of thin black strips, so I should be OK. I have a decal put aside for the stripe on the fuselage band too. Putting the ICM wing to the Hase fuselage sounds like a tricky job, I hope it goes OK for you, its not something I'd like to try!

Hi folks, I've had one heck of a time with those ICM decals....EVERY SINGLE ONE fell to bits when it touched water! I've almost gone insane putting these things back together and to top it all they are starting to silver round the edges!!! Aaaahhh!! Sorry, had to let off a bit of steam. I've now given all the markings a good soak in micro-sol and tomorrow I'll put a couple of coats of gloss over the whole thing, hopefully this will take care of any silvering thats left. Here's how it looks now, see you later, Darren.

Darren,
Excellent workmanship on this subject, even with the pitfalls of grenading decals.
What causes the decals to do this is the paper they are printed on and the ink is not sealed, [this is the glossy sheen on most decal sheets]. To solve this problem is to coat with a light coating od gloss clear.
With the silvering edges.
Cut the carrier film, [the edge of the decal] and apply gloss clear by hand brushing over where the carrier has been cut and let it soak into the carrier film, this will give the decal an even surface to sit on. In some cases when using matt paints and coating in a gloss clear pre decal application, the clear gloss is applied thin and doesn't fill the surface area of the matt finish paints.
The best way for me to discribe this is, a matt finish is like a writting paper surface [fury texture], gloss finish is like glass.
I hope this helps solve the silvering edges of the decals

Thanks for your advice Rob. Most of the decals have settled down now. Its just the walkways and the serial no. that are giving me trouble now, I shall keep on treating them, I just have to be very careful as the starboard serial no is now made up of several pieces, it was a real pain to get it all in alignment! Roll on the day I can build a Tamiya Spitfire!
See you later,
Darren.

Darren,
Your rendintion is looking more realistic now the decals have been applied. It's a pitty the Spitfire Tamiya kit stop at the Mk V's.

Darren,
Tally Ho decals have a set for the P-40b that Caldwell flew when stationed with 112 Sqn RAF in Nth Africa. I've shelved my ICMgawa kit bash for the moment. My Mk V is almost to the Dullcoat stage, so I'll post pix soon.

Thanks for your kind words folks!
Rob, I've never built a P-40 before, now I've got a good reason to! I'll look out for the decals.
Darren.
