Sean,
Spray the lighter 'Sky' fighter band a little larger in width to the box ilustration and when dry cover with masking tape. If the kit decal has the yellow fighter ID across the leading edge of the main wing then use it, if not, spary an area a little larger than the length in white, let it dry and spary the yellow, when dry mask off.
Do the undersurface cammo colour, when dry mask of the area of demarcation on the fuselage and lower areas of the horizontal tailplanes and trailing edge of the wing root.
Then do the Green cammo patern followed by the Grey, when dry remove the masking tape and apply a clear coat for the decals to sit on a smooth surface.
Hope this helps a little.
I got the clear coat on my two Spits today, I hope to be decalling tomorrow.

G'day, Both the 48 and 72 Spit's have some decals on them, the clipped bird is 48 and is option 'B' of the Tamiya kit, the 72 is a Hasegawa [Closterman], in RAAF markings but only the 1st TAF 'Ace of Spades' fin flash and the roundals are applied. The spinner is painted in Humbrol #90 Biege Green These decals are from a very old OOP ESCI decal sheet, they had been coated in clear gloss, prior to removing from the sheet, [this practice holds broken decals together to be applied to the model], this set of decals were for A58-464 [CR-C], but the CRC decals are out of register to the model, the roundals show a little yellowing around the edges and are average for there 25 year age. The masking tape Tamiya 18mm on the tailplane undersurface, removed a little of the paint, but I'll fix that later, I may put the Sharks mouth motif on this bird as at present I'm undecided to which subject this will end up as.

Looks Great Rob I think looking at yours i might have to get the Humbrol 90 the 23 looks too light compered to my decals at the moment i've ground to a halt , which is annoying because i'm out of tape

Thanks Sean,
Know how you feel, it happens to us all on the tape side of things, if you only have #23 add a little white too it, as 90 is close to white on the colour scale. Glad to help.

Ah right I thought 90 was darker the decals i have are the techmod ones the RF letters are a slightly darker version of 23 i may just try making the 23 darker to match the decal as I'm out of tape this will keep me busy

Sean,
This is normaly the case with nost decal manufacturers the ink they use is not always the same colour as the paint used on the real thing.
I'd be interested too see how you replication turns out.

That would be a better option, just trim the carrier film from the edges, after painting and before applying to model

G'day, This ring-in Mk VIII Spifire is the old ARRI [Aka Airfix], 48 scale in the markings of 79 Sqn RAAF when based on Moratai in 1945. The decals are from AeroMaster and the model is now owned by the Officer Training School of the RAAF, as this was on loan to the school from my collection, pending their model subject to be built. Sadly for me my model was most favoured by the Officer in Charge of this contract and I have to get another one provided I can get the decals for this from one of my contacts. These are the only pix I have of this unique cammo scheme

Oh my aching head................. Hi folks, I'm back in the land of the living again and have actually spent time in my workshop! So here's how my weekend went: Friday-back home from work, out for drinks with friends. Saturday-too hungover to do anything! Sunday-some gentle sanding and painting to ease my troubles away:). All I can say is Wow! you fellas have been busy! Those builds are looking good. Rob, that 79 Sqn Mk.VIII is a real beauty! Definately one for my to-do list. I'll hopefuly have some pics to post a little later of my so-called progress. Regards, Darren.

Me again! I have fitted a new needle to my ageing airbrush and so far things are OK, I sprayed this camo on freehand, I just need to tidy up the edges. From the pics I have of the aircraft that I'm building the paintline was a lot sharper than what I have here. I'll use some liquid mask on the iside of the edges and cover the over-spray. I'm still not happy with the port wing root, but its as good as its going to get. Tomorrow, I'll go shopping for a suitable display base and make a start on the diorama accessories. See you later, Darren.

Hi Everyone, my day was spent spraying the edges of my camo pattern a couple of times,(I'm a fussy so and so!) until it looked "right". I now need to do the white ID bands and tidy up the underside. Hopefully, these I can get done tomorrow. Also today, work started on my dio base for Caldwells Mk.VIII. Here's a pic of the base with my artwork behind the glass and the groundwork on top. Its pictured with one of my RAF Mk.VIII's so show you how it should look. I'm going to glue the groundwork flat to the base and use some accessories/figures to complete the scene. How does it look? Regards, Darren.

Excellent work.
The base idea is fantastic and will be an eye catcher.
79 Sqn RAAF, had some unique green birds, let me know if you wish to build this version.

Rob, I definately want to build that version! I tried looking up the decal sheet, but its out of print......I'm hoping I come across an old issue when I go to the UK Nats this month. I've done some more to the base and flattened down the groundwork. White ID marks have been sprayed on and work has pushed on with the other dio accessories. Considering I've been in my workshop most of the day, it does'nt look like I've done much-hence no pics yet. I'll take a pic of the Spit when the making tape comes off later.
Bye for now,
Darren.
